Why the Costa del Sol?

Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea the Costa del Sol spans more than 150km of coastline of one of the most Southerly points on the Iberian Peninsula. Known for its abundant sunshine, the coast was named "Coast of the Sun", and with the sun comes holiday makers and tourist, who flock here from all over the world.

Some of the towns along the coast are busier than others during the Summer months, however due to its great weather and high volume of golf courses, the coast provides tourism all year round. Some of these areas are Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Manilva and Casares.

The Costa del Sol is not only popular with golfers but with other sports which include, water sports, paragliding, parasailing, hiking, canyoning and one of the most widely seen is cycling. In addition to sports, the costa has some of the best Mediterranean gastronomy in Spain, and next to the sea, fresh fish and shellfish feature heavily in their dishes.

Another reason for the destinations popularity is due to its transport links. In recent years and due to expansion, Málaga airport has become an important transport hub in Europe, seeing millions of passengers pass through the airport every year. An alternative route into Europe and used by many UK residents is flying into Gibraltar, however the choice of operators is limited, but this is offset by more convenient arrival times. Both these airports are approximately 45 minutes away from Marbella.

The scenery is surprising varied with stunning mountain ranges to sweeping beaches which stretch for miles. Add to this the rich Spanish culture and it is a recipe for one of the best locations in Europe to both visit and live.

A relatively recent addition to many areas on the Costa del Sol is the introduction of paseos or boardwalks, allowing superb coastal walking opportunities, obstructed before by non-continuous paseos. Something that has now been addressed by many towns along the coast in an effort to make accessibility much easier.
